STARS Lottery scam resurfaces

Feb 12, 2018 | 12:46 PM

It looks like scammers are again using the STARS Lottery to try to steal from people.

A call comes in and whoever answers is told they have a chance to get a huge sum of money by someone claiming to be with the STARS Lottery Company.

Our newsroom got one of these calls.

“Today is your blessed day, alright?” the caller says, going on to add that “This is not about any tickets because you know that you can purchase tickets from the STARS, right? This is not about any tickets, this is a promotional draw.”

The call came from a number with an 876-area code, a code that is used in Jamaica.

“Well sir, I’m going to say to you today congratulations alright, because you’re a lucky winner today and this is your chance now, sir, to receive $5.5-million dollars, alright?” says the caller.

The background noise included a crowing rooster and barking dogs.

Schemes like this can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-449-2444.
