Volunteers needed for athlete’s villages at Summer Games

May 14, 2018 | 2:24 PM

Hosting the Alberta Summer Games this July will be a big job and require the help of 2,000 volunteers.

The three local school districts have all donated schools to be used as athlete’s villages and about 200 people are needed to help with just the villages alone.

Lindsay McNeil, who is the Manager of the Summer Games, says the athlete’s villages “mayors” have an important job. They are responsible for the safety and security of the kids at the schools where they will be staying.

“They will greet the kids when they come in. They check their badges to make sure that they are supposed to be in that school.”

She says they’ll also be responsible for making sure nobody is coming in that isn’t supposed to be there.

There is an 11 p.m. curfew.  It’s lights out for everybody in the facility at that time.

The athlete’s villages will be supervised 24 hours a day.  Volunteers for this department need to be at least 18 and a criminal record check is required.

Over 500 people have signed to volunteer for the games so far and McNeil says overall they still need help in the food sector, about 250 people are needed there. They are also looking for more volunteers to help with security.

The 2018 Alberta Games will take place July 19 to 22 in Grande Prairie.
