Rapid flashing beacon crosswalks to be installed in the city

May 25, 2018 | 5:54 AM

The City of Grande Prairie will be installing seven new crosswalks as part of what officials call a ‘pilot low-cost’ project.

The crosswalks will have flashing beacons that would be activated by the pedestrian by pushing a button that will be mounted on the pole.

According to the city, the installments are solar powered and can be put in anywhere there is no access to electricity.

They will be installed at three schools and four high traffic areas by the end of June and will take two weeks each to install.

The pilot project will be monitored for a year before officials decide if more rapid flashing beacon crosswalks will be put up around Grande Prairie.

They will be installed at:

  • 104A Street and Royal Oaks Drive (Roy Bickell School)
  • Pinnacle Drive (École Nouvelle Frontière)
  • 104A Street and 74 Avenue (Derek Taylor School)
  • 98 Street and 103 Avenue (Grande Prairie Public Library/City Hall)
  • 89A Street and Crystal Lake Drive (Chandelier Park)
  • 104 Avenue and east of 115 Street (Points West Living)
  • 108 Street and 132 Avenue (Arbour Hills)
