Seeding moving along in the Peace

May 25, 2018 | 2:09 PM

The warm, dry weather is helping Peace Region farmers get seeding done.

“It’s going pretty good. There’s still lots of guys in the field. I think many people should be wrapping up by the weekend or sometime next week,” says Rycroft-area farmer Warren Sekulic.

He adds the rapid onset of spring almost took farmers by surprise.

“It went from winter to summer in no time, so everyone’s been hammer-down and going as hard as they can. We’re going to need a rain, though.”

Sekulic says moisture conditions are still good at his farm.

“We have decent moisture, but these mid-to-high 20 days with the wind are sucking the moisture out quick. But, it’s great, it’s really good conditions. I couldn’t have asked for better spring conditions.”

The May 15 crop report from Alberta Agriculture says on average, 37.7 percent of the crop is in the ground across all regions and crops. That number stood at 32 percent in the Peace.
