PWSD Superintendent retires after more than a decade in position

Jun 29, 2018 | 2:53 PM

Sheldon Rowe, Superintendent for Peace Wapiti School Division (PWSD), has a few things to wrap up this summer before he heads into retirement.

He says he is looking forward to “slowing down” and not being glued to his smartphone. He has a few buckets of paint ready for a project and after that, there is plans to possibly get a part-time job or just soak in the time.

If young people are thinking of a career, Rowe recommends education.

“My best advice is teaching is a great career. You can spend time with your kids. You can spend time teaching other’s kids. As you get older, you can get into things like administration. The (job) takes a few more hours but it gives you things to do,” said Rowe.

Rowe spent his career all over the region. He began his career teaching at Beaverlodge High School in 1980 and moved onto Teepee Creek in 1981. He taught at Harry Balfour for a number of years and in the 1990s, Rowe accepted his first Administrator position in Hythe. From Hythe, he moved over to Wembley. He then moved into the PWSD central office and has been the superintendent for the last 10 to 12 years.

“Without a doubt, the best part is teaching junior high kids. They like being there. They have a sense of humour and they challenge. Certainly, a very positive experience. The planning is fine and the paperwork is great, but dealing with people is way more enjoyable.”

There is no replacement chosen for Rowe as all new superintendent contracts in Alberta are still awaiting approval.
