ASIRT seeking witnesses to officer-involved shooting near Whitecourt

Jul 6, 2018 | 12:25 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has released some details on the officer-involved shooting near Whitecourt earlier this week.

On July 3, RCMP were called out to look for a specific vehicle that was associated with an incident in Valhalla the day before. At around noon Tuesday, officers found the vehicle at the Chickadee Creek rest stop near Whitecourt. According to a media release, the man in the vehicle seemed to be asleep in the driver’s seat.

When officers approached the vehicle, a confrontation occurred, which resulted in officers discharging their firearms which hit the suspect. The man sustained significant injuries.

The Emergency Response Team was called in and the suspect was confirmed to have sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

ASIRT is looking to speak to any witnesses that may have been at the Chickadee Creek rest stop at around noon on Tuesday, July 3. They are specifically looking for a Ford Escape that was dark in colour and another larger work or commercial style vehicle. Witnesses can call the ASIRT office at 780-644-1483.
