Speeding vehicles worrying Crystal Lake resident

Jul 9, 2018 | 12:25 PM

People who live in the Crystal Lake neighbourhood are fed up with speeding motorists.

The latest incident over the weekend where a truck crashed into a house, and two other vehicles ended up in the front yard, has residents on high alert.

Dave Newstead, who lives in the neighbourhood says it happened on Crystal Lake Drive right across from a park where kids often play.

He says there’s often photo radar set up by that park, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. One lady who was operating photo radar by the playground told Newstead she catches around 60 people a day speeding through Crystal Lake Drive.

“When my wife backs out (of the driveway), I just wait for the crash because they come just flying. At night they go by up to 100 km/hr,” said Newstead.

He says since 92 Street was twinned, motorists have been using Crystal Lake Drive as a shortcut to the north end of Grande Prairie and to get out of the city faster.

“It’s just a shortcut and it’s high speed. Do people have such important things going on in their lives that they have to go through there at 100 km/hr? And motorcycles go through there too just flying, it’s ridiculous.”

Newstead says this is the second time in the past year something like this has happened on the same block.  Last year a truck took out a light standard and went through his neighbour’s yard, took out some trees and the vehicle ended up in a pedestrian walkway.

“Somebody is going to get killed,” he said. “Once they turn in to Crystal Lake Drive at the store on the corner, they pick up steam, and some of them actually don’t slow down for the park, some do, but when they get through they pick up speed.”

He’s concerned for the kids playing, young parents with strollers and people out walking their dogs.

“They would have been dead (Saturday) if they had been in that area, they’d be dead.”

He says he’s reached out to the city, but in his opinion, the speeding issues have not been curbed one bit.

RCMP have not confirmed to our newsroom if charges have been laid or if there were any injuries after this latest incident Saturday night.
