Zone 8 athletes expected to do well at the ASG

The Alberta Summer Games officially get going with competition set to begin at 8:00 a.m.

Dylan Cartier with the Games expects our local athletes to do well in a number of sports.

“Beach volleyball, in past results has quite often done very well. Team sports, we have a little bit more of a difficult time here in Zone 8, but some of those individual sports like Track and Field, canoe, kayak, mountain biking, we have some pretty good athletes representing Zone 8.”

He says it will be an advantage for local athletes to be playing at home.

“Whether it’s a field, whether it’s a court, a pool, whether it’s outdoors, this is where they have grown up, they’ve practised, they’ve put in the hours, they’ve visualized winning on these fields and courts.”

Energy Minister Marg McCuaig-Boyd is in Grande Prairie for the games and says it takes her back to when she was a coach.

“In the summer I used to coach Track and Field and I was zone coach for Zone 8 and in the winter, I coached Team Handball.”

She hopes to take in an event or two while here.

“I’d probably try (going) to the Track and Field, I have a passion for Track and Field, I’m a big basketball fan so I’m hoping in between the other things I am doing this weekend, get out to some of those games.”

The Games conclude Sunday with closing ceremonies at the CKC Grandstand.
