Crime rate up in City, down in rural GP: Stats Can

Statistics Canada has released its Crime Severity Index from 2017 and the crime rate in the city is up while rural Grande Prairie is down.

The CSI for Grande Prairie last year was 162.80, up six points from 2016 (156.03) but not near the 214.10 in 2015.

The severity of crimes reported to Grande Prairie rural RCMP is down considerably according to the numbers, sitting at 99.57, down 9 points from the year before (108.89).

And the numbers coming out of the Town of Beaverlodge are up from 97.20 (2016) to 99.05 (2017).

 

The rate of violent crimes was up slightly in both the city and the Town of Beaverlodge while down in the county.

– City: 2017 143.04, 2016 141.36, 2015 192.46

– Rural GP: 2017 81.93, 2016 95.35, 2015 173.68

– Town of Beaverlodge: 2017 69.93, 2016 65.58, 2015 92.52

 

The non-violent crime rate increased in the city and the Town of Beaverlodge, while down noticeably in rural Grande Prairie.

– City: 2017 169.53, 2016 160.94, 2015 221.54

– Rural GP: 2017 105.68, 2016 113.51, 2015 168.08

– Town of Beaverlodge: 2016 109.29, 2016 108.35, 2015 213.81

 

Grande Prairie’s Crime Severity Index ranks behind only Red Deer on a list of comparably-sized communities in Alberta, according to numbers compiled by Statistics Canada.
 
Grande Prairie’s rate is 162.8 compared to 221.56 for Red Deer.
 
In fact, the rate for crimes reported in the Grande Prairie rural RCMP’s jurisdiction, 99.57, also ranks ahead of those reported to detachments in Wood Buffalo, Medicine Hat, St. Albert, Strathcona County, and Lethbridge.
 
Peace River’s municipal CSI came in at 133 while rural was 114.
 
Fairview reported a 75, Spirit River 58.
 
This index is a measure of what Statistics Canada calls the relative seriousness of all crimes reported to police.
