Teenager dead after trying to escape police in stolen vehicle

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a 16-year-old boy after a failed bid by Edmonton-area R-C-M-P to arrest him and two other suspects in a stolen vehicle investigation.

Mounties say that on Tuesday, officers tracked a stolen sport-utility vehicle carrying three people to a location in Sherwood Park and tried without success to box it in.

The S-U-V got away and police pursued it before the chase was called off, but minutes later the vehicle rolled on the Sherwood Park Freeway and the teen was found dead in the passenger seat.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says it will determine whether the Mounties’ actions were lawful.
