Fentanyl-related deaths in Grande Prairie up in the second quarter of 2018

The number of fentanyl-related deaths in Grande Prairie has gone up according to the latest statistics from Alberta Health.

In its 2018 Alberta Opioid Response Surveillance Report second quarter numbers, there were 8 accidental drug poisoning deaths compared to three in the first quarter of the year, with 11 year-to-date.

The city’s rate by municipality is 29.7 per cent per 100,000 residents, behind Red Deer and Lethbridge.

The report also has the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital ranked number 10 for “facilities utilized for hospitalizations related to opioid use and other substances of misuse, January 1, 2015, to March 31, 2018,” with 321 or 3 per cent of all stays.

Last year, there were 27 fentanyl-related deaths here which was the worst rate in the province.

Across the province, 355 people have died from apparent accidental opioid poisoning deaths.

When it came to naloxone kits, the report says “from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2018, 79,406 naloxone kits were dispensed in Alberta through Alberta Health Services’ (AHS’) naloxone program, and 4,505 reversals were selfreported.”
