Charges have been laid against a northern Alberta town and county for alleged breaches of provincial rules regarding landfills.

The Town of Whitecourt is facing 18 counts while Woodlands County has been charged with 12 counts for contravening terms or conditions of their landfill approval, and for actions at the site that required prior approval.

A government release says the charges cover a period between September and November of 2016, although specifics of the alleged breaches are not immediately known.

The first court appearance is set for October 23rd in Whitecourt provincial court.
