Two youth dead after collision north of Dawson Creek

Sep 24, 2018 | 5:24 PM

Highway 97 approximately 35-kilometres north of Dawson Creek was closed in both directions for several hours Sunday evening after a two-vehicle collision. The collision resulted in the death of two people under the age of 18.

RCMP say the collision happened at the Kiskatinaw Bridge around 5 p.m. on September 23, 2018.

Cst. Mike Halskov says a total of eleven people were involved.

“It looks like a mini-van with six occupants was heading south on Highway 97 and turned into a rest area, just north of the bridge, and was impacted a northbound pick-up truck with five people in it,” says Halskov.

The two that died were passengers in the van. Another passenger under the age of 18 was seriously injured and transferred to hospital by air ambulance. Halskov says the other injuries vary but are believed to be non-life threatening.

Dawson Creek RCMP, Fort St. John Traffic Service, a collision reconstructionist and the B.C.’s Coroners Service were called in.

Halskov says the cause of the crash may have been driver error, but the investigation continues.
