County closer to rolling out rural transit bus

Oct 12, 2018 | 5:20 AM

The first route for the County of Grande Prairie’s Rural Transportation Pilot Project should roll out by the end of 2018.

The county received just under $640,000 in operational funding from the province this summer to try out the bus routes for two years. Route one will include eight return trips from the city to Clairmont with two of them extending out to Sexsmith as well. The first phase is set to get underway in the coming months, according to FCSS Director with the county, Kathleen Turner.

Route two will start up in early-2019. It will include return trips twice a day from the city to Wembley and Beaverlodge on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Wednesdays, the bus will extend to Hythe as well.

“We received confirmation of our grant in late June and there has been a lot of legwork that has had to be done in the background. We have always said it would be up and running by late-2018. We hope to have it going by the end of the year,” says Turner.

The county will be contracting out the operations to the city.

“Currently, we are just negotiating our agreements with the City of Grande Prairie and the other municipal partners in the project.”
