Grizzly bear vs. black bears a rare sight: AB Fish and Wildlife

Oct 26, 2018 | 3:12 PM

A video (below) of a grizzly bear digging at a black bear den and preying on a cub is being called “normal behaviour” by Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

Spokesperson Brendan Cox says although it is not out of the ordinary, it is rare to hear about a specific incident.

“When it does happen, it is usually a case of a larger adult bear preying on a cub,” he says.

“Grizzly bears are typically larger and much more powerful than a black bear. But, bears, in general, are very opportunistic hunters, they will eat anything that is available to them. Even other bears in some instances.”

Cox encourages people not to stop at the side of the road to view wildlife as it puts people in danger and gets animals used to human activity.

“We know seeing wildlife is something that is very exciting but we encourage people to move on,” he says.

“The more people that are stopping to look at wildlife, the more habituated the animals might become. If there is a food source nearby, grizzly bears can become aggressive.”

A man from the area says, in a post on Facebook, that he was hunting near Whitecourt when he spotted the bear activity on the side of the road. He posted a video to Facebook and to YouTube.
