Survivors of Suicide Loss to gather this weekend

Nov 15, 2018 | 1:47 PM

The Suicide Prevention Resource Centre is hosting an event this weekend for those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Day will be held this Saturday with a short video, sand ceremony and lunch donated by Oliver’s Funeral Home.

Program Coordinator for Suicide Prevention Resource Centre, Faris Atkinson says the three-and-a-half hour event will allow people to connect.

“I think it is very difficult to make that first step and get out and connect with other people, loss does that to a person. There are times and moments where you want to be by yourself. But, social connections is a very important part of looking after ourselves,” says Atkinson.

She encourages people to come with another person if making that first step is hard.

“Something like this offers a lot of hope. People who have lost somebody just recently can be in the same room with someone who has lost someone to suicide 30 years ago and they can learn from each other, support each other in a safe place,” says Atkinson.

The international day will be celebrated locally from noon until 3:30 p.m. on November 17 at #200 Nordic Court on 99 Street.
