Dawson Creek to provide fresh look for World Junior A Challenge

Dec 18, 2018 | 8:25 AM

Hockey Canada will be returning to the community of Dawson Creek in 2019 with the World Junior A Challenge.

When it comes to deciding on a site for one of Hockey Canada’s events, there are plenty of things to consider as explained by Vice President of Events & Properties Dean McIntosh.

“One was success. If you look at Hockey Canada events and what we have hosted in the past, we tend to go back to communities which have shown the ability to host events and put on a great athlete experience. We look at Dawson Creek and the previous success they have had with our Women’s National team, Under-17 program, and our Under-18 program, and they have certainly had great success hosting events on behalf of Hockey Canada.”

Another factor for Hockey Canada this time around was they were looking for new markets for the World Junior A Challenge.

Dawson Creek had Hockey Canada’s Women’s National team in the city for their fall camp in September and also co-hosted the Under-17’s in 2017.

When it comes to over saturation with the amount of events the community has held, McIntosh stated he doesn’t think it is an issue.

“We recognize the fans of Dawson Creek and that region as a whole, which extends from Grande Prairie to Dawson Creek and Fort St.John along with communities in between, the region as a whole has shown to be very supportive of hockey as a whole.”

The event will be held from December 7-15th, 2019 and it will be the first time the World Junior A Challenge is held in a community which doesn’t have a Junior A hockey club.
