County of Grande Prairie awards over $2.5 million in grants

The County of Grande Prairie has awarded over $2.53 million to more than 80 community groups, as part of County Council’s pledge to provide funding to sport, recreation, cultural organizations and facilities in 2019.

In total, over $1.4 million will be allocated to Community Assistance Grants, over $710,000 to Major Capital Community Projects, and more than $375,000 in Capital Assistance Grants.

The county states that the funding helps support and offset operational costs for organizations located n the county, as well as the communities of Beaverlodge, Grande Prairie, Hythe, Sexsmith and Wembley.

In a statement, Reeve Leanne Beaupre said, “The County is pleased to recognize the valuable work that these organizations contribute and is appreciative of their efforts to provide services and opportunities that enhance the quality of life, sense of safety and pride in our communities.”

Some of the grants awarded include:

-$333,333 each year from 2018-2023, to the La Glace Regional Recreation Centre. Since 2014, that would bring the total contributions from the county to $3-million.
-$133,500 to the Nitehawk Adventure Park, for equipment replacement.
-$75,000 to the Bezanson Booster Club, to install a new school playground.
-$68,941 to the South Peace Centennial Museum, for construction of a new shop.
-$50,000 to the Royal Canadian Legion #54, for modernization of the Grande Prairie Legion Building.
