Storm end road trip with loss to Wolverines

Feb 17, 2019 | 8:25 AM

The Storm fell behind just 10 seconds into the game and couldn’t recover as they fell to the Whitecourt Wolverines 4-2 on the road Saturday night.

Kurtis LaBant made it 1-0 for the home side just 10 seconds into the game, finishing off the feed from Brayden Labant to beat Kaeden Lane.

With Bryce Osepchuk sitting in the box for hooking, the Wolverines capitalized on the power play with Jude Butler making it 2-0 at the 10:04 mark of the first.

The Wolverines dominated the first period, leading 2-0 after one and outshooting the Storm 15-5.

Whitecourt would extend their lead to three with Adam Bricker scoring his 5th of the season just over five minutes into the second period.

Midway through the frame, the Storm were granted the lone man advantage of the period. Bryce Osepchuk would score his 11th goal of the year on that power play, making it 3-1 after two.

In the third, Lukas Konashuk took an interference penalty just 3:58 in, sending the Wolverines to the fourth power play of the contest. Brayden Labant would capitalize, making it 4-1 for Whitecourt.

The Storm’s frustration would boil over late in the game, as Noah Corson and Brayden Labant ended up in a fight, which led to a bit of a line brawl. In all, Corson and Brayden Labant were given five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct. Xavier Pouliot and captain Connor Blake, as well as Hayden Clayton and Kurtis Labant of the Wolverines, each received minor penalties and 10-minute misconducts for their roles in the scrum.

The Storm would capitalize on a power play at the end of the game, as Jonathan Hader scored with just three seconds remaining in the contest.

The Storm finish their three-game road trip with a 1-2 record, and now sit with a 27-25-3 record with five games remaining in the regular season.

They return home tomorrow for a matinee tilt with the Drayton Valley Thunder. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
