Flyers beat Huskies in lone NWJHL game Saturday

Feb 17, 2019 | 11:33 AM

The Fairview Flyers scored three second period goals, closing out their regular season schedule with a 4-2 victory over the Fort St. John Huskies in the lone game on the NWJHL schedule on Saturday.

The Flyers took the early lead, with Eric Dentinger scoring his 17th of the season just over five minutes into the opening frame.

Discipline cost the visitors late in the first though, as Cale Fox and Noah Ross took penalties less than two minutes apart, giving the Huskies the two-man advantage. Jeridyn Loewen tied the game with just three seconds remaining on the five-on-three, and potted another one just a minute later with Ross still sitting in the box. That gave the home side a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

It was the Flyers that got a power play opportunity early in the second, as Zacheri Schlachter tied it up early in the period.

Trenton Biegel and Liam Yasinski added goals a minute-and-a-half apart later in the period, which was all the Flyers needed to cruise to victory.

Fort St John has one game remaining on their regular season schedule, which goes this afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host the JDA Kings. The Huskies do have a first round bye heading into the postseason, finishing with the league’s best record. Dawson Creek finished second and also earned the opening round bye.

The Flyers now have until Wednesday to rest up for their first round series with the North Peace Navigators. The Navs will host game one on Wednesday.

The other first round series has the Kings hosting the Sundown Oilfield Services Sexsmith Vipers, with game one set for Tuesday at the County Sportsplex.
