Second coldest February in past 50 years for Grande Prairie

February was cold in Grande Prairie, but just how cold was it?

The numbers are in and last month was the second-coldest February in the past 50 years.

The average high was minus 16.8 and the average low was minus 30.3. The mean temperature (an avg of daily highs and lows) was -23.6.

The only year in the past half-century that had a colder February was 1979 when the average high was -21.7 and the average low was -29.1.  

The five coldest Februarys in the past 50 years were:

#2 – 2019:  -17 / -24 / -30

#3 – 1994:  -15 / -20 / -26

#4 – 1972:  -13 / -18 / -24

#5 – 1982:  -11 / -18 / -24

Yesterday, to close out February 2019, another extreme cold warning was put in place as a period very cold wind chills of minus 40 to minus 45 were expected to continue for the region.
