June Collins, resident of Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Amisk Court in Beaverlodge, AB, Wembley, AB, and Keynsham, England, passed away after a short illness, on Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at the age of 90 years.
June was born on June 5, 1929 in Islington, London, England to Alfred and Lilly Farley. She was educated in London and Yorkshire. Most of her childhood was spent in London except for when she was evacuated to Yorkshire during the blitz.
In later life, June attended The Open University and was granted a B. Open. After leaving school, she worked for Zetters Football Pools.
She met her future husband, Charles, in London. They married in London in 1950 and daughter, Marian arrived in 1951.
They moved to Park Rd, Keynsham, Somerset. Soon after their daughter Barbara was born (1959), followed by son Alan (1960).
June was a homemaker until she returned to work at Ogden’s Newspaper shop, later working in the K Shoe Shop. She then opened a green grocery store in Bedminster which she ran with her son, Alan.
June was very active in St. Francis Church and a longtime member of the Mother’s Union.
She loved working in her garden. She had a keen interest in wildlife and was an avid birdwatcher. She liked to collect antiques on her many holidays and loved to visit historical places and churches.
After retiring, June immigrated to Wembley, Alberta, Canada, with her husband, Charles, to live on her daughter’s farm. She kept herself busy in her new home and garden, tending her many bird feeders and learning all about Canadian birds. June loved Canada and became a Canadian citizen in December 2003.
After Charles passed in 2009, June moved to Amisk Court in Beaverlodge, and the bird feeders went too! Her grandson, Timothy, was kept busy keeping them full!
After suffering a stroke, June moved to Mackenzie Place in Grande Prairie. She loved to do her puzzles, watch pigeons, and spent many hours reading mystery books.
June will be sadly missed by her children: Marian, Barbara, and Alan; brother Brian; 7 grandchildren: Adrienne, Simon, Timothy, Jennifer, Daniel, Jacob, and Niall; 7 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews in England.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles, mother Lilly, father Alfred, and sister Silvia.
Her family would like to thank the many caregivers at QEII Hospital and Mackenzie place for her excellent care.
A Celebration of Life will be held in summer, 2020.
Memorial donations may be made to Bird Studies Canada (PO Box 160, 115 Front Street, Port Rowan, ON, N0E 1M0) or to Nature Conservancy Canada (245 Eglinton Ave East, Suite 410, Toronto, ON, M4P 3J1).
