Allard named to provincial MMIWG panel

The MLA for Grande Prairie thinks a new panel she has been named to “is going to need a lot of Kleenex.”

Tracy Allard has been named to the Joint Working Group on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. It will work on recommendations for Alberta’s action plan.

She is one of seven people named to the panel.

“Me, personally, I’m hoping to gather compelling stories (so) that we establish a better base of understanding what’s happened and how do we move forward in healing from here. I would also say that there were some tangible calls to action and so we’re going to dig into those and see what we can do collectively to tell the story and learn from it.”

She thinks understanding will be key in this process.

“I think when we understand what’s happened and understand the issues, we can move forward with tangible solutions and tangible steps to heal. I think that’s the first piece that I would like to see just across our province. I think that Alberta is positioned well to lead the nation, actually, in terms of real reconciliation, not just words that say that.”

The group has a one-year mandate, but there is a chance that could be extended. Allard does not anticipate legislation coming from this.

“This was part of our platform commitment, that we were going to take this seriously and I’m very humbled and honoured to be chosen to be part of the Working Group and to dig into a greater understanding for myself personally, as well on these issues.”

This is part of the province’s efforts to come up with an action plan related to a call for justice in a final report that came out after a national inquiry.
