Red Deer woman arrested for fleeing police near Whitecourt

May 4, 2020 | 2:06 PM

A woman from Red Deer faces several charges after trying to avoid being arrested by police in Whitecourt.

RCMP say it was at about 9:30 p.m. on May 1 when a SUV with a lone occupant was stopped for speeding by an Alberta Sheriff on Highway 43.

Whitecourt RCMP were assisting when the female driver sped off from the traffic stop during an impaired driving investigation. A media release says the female had been advised she was under arrest before she fled from police.

A short pursuit was initiated and police say the vehicle was at one point running on all four rims after hitting a spike belt near Highway 43. The SUV eventually stopped and the female driver was arrested without incident.

Police seized in excess of 30 grams of cannabis from inside the vehicle.

Ashlee Phillips, 31, of Red Deer was charged with:

  • Fail/refuse to comply with an ASD demand
  • Assault police officer
  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous driving
  • Obstruction of a peace officer
  • Unlawful possession of cannabis in excess of 30 grams

Phillips was released from custody after a judicial hearing and is set to appear in Whitecourt provincial court on July 14.
