Canada Day Celebrations to return to Grande Prairie this year

Jun 30, 2022 | 12:06 PM

The City of Grande Prairie is ready for the first Canada Day celebration after the pandemic.

Hayley Kramps, Recreation Programming and Event Supervisor with the City says it will be similar to events in the past but will have a new parade route due to Downtown construction and a few other changes.

“Canada Day will start this year at 1 p.m. with our Canada Day Parade which is the first to return in quite a few years. After the parade is finished we will all be invited to Muskoseepi Park at 2:30 p.m. to enjoy live entertainment, bouncy castles, food trucks, carnival rides, carnival-themed games, and many more items,” says Kramps.

The parade will travel from 108 Avenue in Hillside and end at the Leisure Centre parking lot at 2:30 p.m.

Kramps says the community has shown a massive interest in this year’s events, especially the parade.

“We have had so much interest in the celebration as a whole, specifically the parade it has been a really unique experience for us because we have almost all new floats this year, typically year after year we have a lot of the same people coming back, but this year we saw a really great side of the community with a lot of new businesses wanting to participate in the parade.”

Kramps says they hope all floats are decorated to at least 75 per cent of the way for Canada Day.

There will also be changes to the event in Muskoseepi Park as well to reflect the diverse culture we have in Canada.

“We tried to offer something for everybody but most importantly it was important to us to have everything accessible as possible, so we got something for everybody and we have almost no barriers to participate in any of those things.”

Kramps believes with such a wide variety of activities and bands, they do reflect Canadian culture and have something for every resident of Grande Prairie.

Canada Day Live Entertainment Lineup:

  • The Legendary Life of Tom Petty featuring Clayton Bellamy – 8:45 p.m.
  • JayWalker – 7:30 p.m.
  • Northbloods – 6:15 p.m.
  • Christina Rogers – 5:30 p.m.
  • McKindred – 4:45 p.m.
  • Brent Boivin – 4:15 p.m.
  • Mandee Rae – 3:45 p.m.

Parking in Muskoseepi Park will not be an option this year to do all the activities for residents, but transit will be free that day running on statutory holiday hours from 8:45 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.
