Hard times in oil patch discussed at council

Nov 7, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Recent news of Husky Energy layoffs and of Canadian energy company Encana changing their name and moving to the US for more investor opportunities, oil and gas workers are saying Alberta is struggling.

Rob Petrone, President of the Grande Prairie Petroleum Association, went before council to discuss the current climate in his industry on Monday.

He says while Grande Prairie may be doing well with things such as Seven Generations Energy bringing their head office here, not everywhere is as fortunate.

“We’re living in a bubble here in Grande Prairie, and we’re very fortunate to be here, because the rest of the province isn’t experiencing this at all. In fact, it’s a downturn, it’s laying people off, it’s going into receivership, selling their equipment.”

Petrone says that many of these issues are being ignored.

“There’s been over 100,000 in the oil and gas industry that have been laid off here in the last year and a half in Alberta. That’s a huge number, when you look at down east in Ontario, SNC-Lavalin maybe laid off two, three thousand people and the world’s coming to an end, and here in Alberta, there’s 100,000 people put out of work and you hear nothing in the media about it.”

He says that next year, the forecast for drilling looks to be less due to curtailments, something he would like to see more relief for.
