Grande Prairie Friendship Centre ready to reopen following temporary closure

Jun 8, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The Community Kitchen program in the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre will reopen on Monday, June 8.

The Community Kitchen is a program run by the Friendship Centre and the Salvation Army that provides three meals a day, five days a week to those who need it. It was given a grant from the City of Grande Prairie back in November 2019.

The Centre was previously closed temporarily following a positive diagnoses of COVID-19 in one of their staff members.

Len Morisette, President of the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, says that they are ready to re-open following a thorough process of getting the Centre ready.

“Luckily, because of great policies and procedures, our exposure was limited so nobody else tested positive in the Community Kitchen, which is wonderful news.”

He says that they did see community support during the closure, and that Certek Heat Machines Inc. came in to install a new heating system to fully sanitize the kitchen.

Morisette adds that their partner in the Community Kitchen, the Salvation Army, set up a mobile food truck to serve food during the closure of the kitchen.

“Alberta Health Services, and the different organizations worked with us to make sure that everybody was safe, and the process of getting ready, everybody was tested who needed to be tested right away, their tests came back.”

He does say that all of the same rules and guidelines will be in place, such as physical distancing and staggered visits.

The Centre will be serving three meals a day, with the first one beginning at 8 a.m.
