Heat warning issued for Grande Prairie area with 30 degree days in forecast

Jul 6, 2021 | 4:31 PM

A heat warning has been issued for the Grande Prairie area and most of northern Alberta, as temperatures are set to reach around 30 degrees Celsius over the next few days.

Environment Canada says temperatures are set to cool off by the weekend. Overnight lows during the next few days are slated to drop to 14 degrees.

The weather authority says residents should consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day, take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible, drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated during that time.

“Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.”

The heat warning follows the historic heat wave which came over Grande Prairie last week, sending temperatures sky rocketing to as high as 41.5 degrees on June 29.

That 41.5 degrees set last Tuesday was the hottest day recorded between June 25 and July 2 in Alberta.

Heat warnings are issued by Environment Canada when very high temperatures are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
