In partnership with the Mental Health Foundation, the Communities in Mind campaign focuses on raising vital funds for local mental health programs and initiatives across Alberta. We’re proud to share that together, we raised an incredible $80,219.17 across all participating Co-ops! The @nogirlleftbehindevent is a local nonprofit event whose mission is to empower both girls and women. With a one of a kind approach to the in-person events held in GP, Edmonton, Kingston, Toronto and even Oregon, the event is a full day of learning how to be empowered and build self worth with the undeniable link between mental health and self worth. The organization has only been in operation for 17 months and has grown exponentially. NGLB now offers online courses as well. Founder, Kiki Rozema has been a teacher in the Grande Prairie district for 25 years. The event implements interactive tools to get attendees involved and to enhance their learning. Speakers are inspiring and believe in the mission to empower females so they can do and be anything their heart desires. On Saturday, April 5, we hosted Robin Cisek, a Metis pop artist who came and sang for a girls' session (she has a bachelor of education degree)Our full day event includes 6 sessions, 5 speakers, a buffet lunch, a free NGLB shirt and additional resources sent to allow women via EMAIL. This year we also included a candy bar!

Community Impact Co-op donated a lovely basket full of groceries and a dutch oven, valued at $200. We were able to use the gift basket on our prize table. We had a lot of comments and excitement over the basket and it's contents. The prize table was able to raise over $6500 this weekend and having such a high value prize included, definitely made an impact. How many people were positively impacted by your event?: We saw around 1200 people through our tournament this weekend, all having a wonderful time making memories. Specifically, the funds we've raised this weekend will go to provide educational psychology evaluations for children, and we expect there will be approximately 5-6 children who will be able to receive the assessment. What support is still needed and how can people learn more or get involved?: The wait lists for ed psych evaluations continue to grow every year with each new child entering the school system. Children just moving into a district, or just starting school, can actually bump those at the top of the waitlists down if their needs are greater. This is why it is so important to raise this money. The more evaluations that the schools can afford to do, the more kids who are helped. There is no end to the wait lists; therefore, there will always be a need for this monetary support.

Last year, we launched an exciting new initiative to encourage volunteering within our team. Each quarter, team members who volunteer are entered for a chance to donate $500 to a charity or non-profit of their choice. We’re thrilled to announce our fourth-quarter winner: Sheila Briody, a Director on our Board! Sheila, a resident near Wembley, has chosen to support the Wembley United Church Food bank.
