Life sentence after Sucker Creek murder

Alberta Justice says the man charged after a 2021 murder at Sucker Creek First Nation has been found guilty.

Travis Myles Melnyk was convicted of first-degree murder in Peace River court and given the mandatory life sentence.

He had also been charged with forcible confinement, but that charge was deemed to fall under the double jeopardy provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Melnyk was arrested after a 35-year-old man was found dead at a Sucker Creek home on November 19, 2021.

RCMP said at the time they had received a report of an assault with a weapon and the victim was dead when emergency services arrived at the scene.

Jail time for second accused in break and enter, shot fired incident

Alberta Justice says a second man charged after a report of a break and enter where a shot was fired from 2022 has been given jail time.

Colton Beckman of Grande Prairie was given a 630-day jail sentence, minus 374 days credit for time already spent in custody, after pleading guilty to a half dozen charges in Grande Prairie court.

Those charges included resisting a peace officer, flight from a peace officer, shopbreaking with intent, failure to comply with a release order, and two firearms-related charges.

Several other charges were dropped.

He and Darcy Beckman of Saddle Hills County were charged after an incident on October 28, 2022. Grande Prairie Rural RCMP said at the time they got a report of a break-in at around 10:30 p.m. from the area of Range Road 62 and Township Road 731.

Mounties said a shot was taken at the vehicle belonging to the person who made the complaint.

Two suspects were later located in a stolen truck.

Darcy Beckman was given an 810-day sentence in relation to this same incident in November.

He was also given a six-month sentence in December of 2021 in relation to a similar crime from September of 2021.

Six-month sentence after theft, dangerous driving arrest

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a theft and dangerous driving incident from nearly two years ago has been given a six-month jail sentence.

Chase Glowdek was given a 120-day sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of possession of stolen property over $5,000 in Grande Prairie court. He was also given concurrent 30-day sentences each on charges of possession of a controlled substance and failure to comply with a release order, plus one day in jail and a 12-month license suspension on a charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Glowdek was originally facing eight charges after an incident on July 12, 2022.

RCMP said at the time just before 8:00 a.m. that day, they got a report of a theft from a yard in the Country Club area. The truck used in the theft had been reported stolen from Crystal Landing a day earlier.

Mounties said they located the vehicle being driven dangerously in the city and an arrest was made with the help of Police Dog Services.
