Two-year-old holdover fire re-ignited near Crystal Creek

May 10, 2024 | 1:39 PM

County of Grande Prairie Fire crews have provided an update on a blaze they were battling last night (Thursday, May 9) in the Crystal Creek area, near Range Road 34, and Township Road 712.

Crews from Bezanson, Teepee Creek, Clairmont, Dunes and Alberta wildfire all responded at 9 p.m., with support from a helicopter and heavy equipment.

A perimeter has since been established and the fire is expected not to further grow in size. The helicopter and heavy equipment will be back at the site today, to fully extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is being attributed to a burn pile that was last used two years ago and, due to the hot and dry conditions, it re-ignited.

Fire crews are now taking this opportunity to ask residents to check any burn piles used in the last two years and ask residents to express caution in all outdoor activities, including the use of off-highway vehicles.

At this time, the Grande Prairie Forest Area is under a Red Flag Watch, and as of Wednesday, May 8, a Fire Ban was put into effect for the GPFA as well as the City of Grande Prairie.

If you see a wildfire, residents are asked to report it right away by dialling 310-FIRE.
