ASIRT concludes investigation into non-fatal officer-involved shooting

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has completed their investigation into a non-fatal Grande Prairie RCMP officer-involved shooting in 2023 following a hostage situation.

On December 20, 2023, the suspect had entered a house he had previously shared with his wife prior to separating, an argument ensued, and the suspect brandished a shotgun at his ex-wife, taking her hostage and posting photos and video of his attack onto her social media account.

RCMP became aware of the situation and were able to rescue the hostage during a hand-off of cigarettes, but the suspect remained in the building with his weapon and was later shot by three officers after firing a single shot in their direction.

ASIRT has concluded the officers had reason to believe the suspect risked their lives if they did not act, and their use of force was proportionate, necessary, and reasonable.
