Lakeland Off-Leash Dog Park water survey results say wetlands are safe

On June 9, 2022, Grande Prairie City Hall put out an advisory to residents to refrain from using the Lakeland subdivision Off-Leash Dog Park due to a hydrocarbon based-product being released into the wetlands.

The City of Grande Prairie has now been notified of the results of water sampling that was conducted over the past months and has been reviewed by Alberta Environment and Parks.

The results of the water sampling survey show hydrocarbon levels are within the amount permissible in the adjacent wetlands at the Lakeland Off’Leash Dog Park.

The City says the wetlands are included in their regular water sampling schedule and ongoing testing will occur.

Residents are advised to not let their pets go into or drink the water in the wetlands, as it may be stagnant and not healthy for them.

A release from the City also notes keeping pets away helps protect the ecosystem of the wetlands, as they are sensitive and home to a variety of species like migratory birds, waterfowl, foxes, insects and more.

Signage will be adjusted around the area as a reminder to not let your pet swim in or drink the water.
