RCMP arrest two suspects after locating a stolen vehicle, seizing weapons

Oct 26, 2023 | 2:27 PM

The RCMP Western Alberta District (WAD) Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) reported locating a stolen pick-up in the town of Falher on October 19.

In the release, RCMP said Mounties then saw the occupants exit the stolen vehicle and head into a store, where they were arrested without incident.

A search of the stolen vehicle was then conducted, turning up a number of illegal items, including:

  • A firearm
  • Ammunition
  • Other weapons

A 34-year-old Grimshaw resident, Clifford Carifelle, is facing twelve charges:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Six counts of firearm-related charges;
  • Two counts of possessing firearms while prohibited
  • Three counts of failing to comply with a release order

Thirty-two-year-old Dannielle Buggins, a resident of Berwyn, is facing seven charges:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Five counts of firearms-related charges

Following a judicial hearing, Carifelle was remanded into custody, while Buggins was released. Both have a court date set for November 2 in Fahler.

In February this year, Carifelle was given a 462-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and assaulting a peace officer. Credit for time already spent in custody resulted in the sentence being time served.

This was in connection with an arrest in August of 2021 after an attempted traffic stop on a motorcycle in Grimshaw.

The bike sped away but later stalled. The suspect then threw the bike and a helmet at police before trying to hide under the deck of a nearby home.

Carifelle is also due in Peace River court for sentencing after being found guilty of two firearms charges related to an arrest in October of 2022.

Carifelle and two other people were charged after a search of a Grimshaw home on October 21, 2022, as part of a firearms investigation.

Police found methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine and several weapons, including a semi-automatic rifle.
