NWP’s new EMR certificate to “fill important need” province-wide

Jan 7, 2025 | 6:00 AM

Applications are now being accepted for Northwestern Polytechnic’s new Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) training certificate.

This new program will get underway in the spring. NWP says it fully aligns with the Alberta Credential Framework, with 135 hours of online classroom theory, and 164 hours of clinical training.

During the course, students will also take part in ambulance placements and other in-person training at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital, allowing students to apply their knowledge.

Once they have completed this certificate, graduates will have a choice to either enter the workforce or continue their education at NWP through the Primary Care Paramedic certification.

In a release, NWP President and CEO, Dr. Vannessa Sheane said this “program will fill an important need,” during a time when “the province is navigating a shortage of qualified EMRs.”

In the same release, NWP said this new program also aligns with its commitment to “responsive career-focused education” by addressing, current and local workforce gaps.
